Bunch of SIM cards

October 6th, 2011

I travel a lot. It is a part of my job. I like to be in touch so on most of the trips I tend to buy a local SIM card. Current collection include:

T-mobile US
Plus PL
Tango LU
Vodafone NZ
Qcell GM
O2 IE

More to be added :)

Back from US

October 6th, 2011

It was hot. So many meanings to it.

I went for Gretchen Wilson gig – this was good. Some short clips are available on my YouTube channel.

Another highlight was loads of driving – most of it in quite shitty but very keenly priced by AVIS (£220 for 7 days!) Chevrolet Cruze. It was my first time driving in US, first time long distance with automatic speed-gear and first time with turbo petrol 1.4 engine. Overall – the only use of such car is to satisfy basic needs in town. Otherwise – do NOT go for it :)

Back from New Zealand

Nice … really nice and clean.

At the time of my month long visit the weather was very much Belfast like. Rugby craziness added up to crowds.

Not much joys of exploration as most of the time job keep me in the city.

Lapdesk N700

Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N700 Comfortable Notebook

There are good reasons why laptops are called laptops, but also good reasons why they are often called notebook instead. Confused? You should be, but suffice it to say that if the laptop should be usable on your lap, a large number of producing a little more heat than is comfortable. Another problem with laptops large number of speakers is relatively poor. These two problems, as CushionSpeaker Philips, we also discussed today that the Logitech Speaker LapDesk N700 is designed to solve.

Logitech Speaker Lapdesk N700

Although a greater good, or at least wider, the N700 is very similar in design to LapDesk Logitech Comfort. His office segment has a slight slope to 10 degrees, used to hold your laptop in a good position ergonomically beneficial. When combined with air soft mesh fabric and upholstery, it is President LapDesk very comfortable to use even for extended periods.

One thing is to be expected the Comfort LapDesk itself was a piece of useful kit but President LapDesk brings so much to the table. Its extra width, which can accommodate laptops up to 16 inches in size, provides that little extra space for USB-powered 2W stereo speakers and their little port holes molded into the back.

The audio production is very impressive. There’s depth and power production, loans of all types of media (movies, music clips online) a greater sense of theater. They can certainly fill a room, but not surprised at the low frequency below is not a strong point. Logitech even includes volume controls and a discreet mute button on the right side, which is a very clean, more intuitive.

Another most unusual feature is the cooling fan. Initially we were skeptical it takes a lot of airflow to cool down significantly from a laptop like this – but it actually turns out to be a very cool (ing) addition. It draws air from under and behind the LapDesk calm, growing on the underside of your machine. This will help your laptop (a little), but it is probably more consistent profit is your lap cool, because it eliminates the lack of air to have something sitting on your lap. If you prefer not to use the fan, however, there is a switch to turn it off. [via trustedreviews]

Nokia N8

December 8th, 2010

Friend of mine was so good to lend me brand new N8 for tests. My opinion is probably quite biased because after several Nokias (Cityman NMT, 2110, 3210, 6110, 6210, N95, E71, E72 …) I’ve fallen in love in my HTC Desire but … hey … let us try …

As to outlook – quite strange … looks solid build and premium materials but …

I disliked lack of smoothness … some elements (like camera cover/lens – also housing a speaker) sticks out and make whole phone never lay flat. Protecting flap for shared HDMI/USB port is somehow … flapping :)
I liked the idea to allow replacement of SIM and memory card without disassembling the phone and full sized stereo jack.

Software wise – great step forward from old symbian and Nokia Lover will find it well designed but … It lacks intuitiveness I got to using Android 2.2. Also responsiveness seems to be pretty random – quite annoying when you want to do something quick.

Camera … och … CAMERA! The camera in N8 is the camera. The only reason I would buy N8 would be the camera. I am happy to say that N8 is camera with added (smart)phone :)

back from Gambia

December 6th, 2010

I must say … I liked my Gambian holidays. It is quite a diferent world down there. Large gaps between people struggling to survive with £1/day budget, wannabe businessmen with 20 years old taxis making £300/mo, real business people who fence themselves from others in oh-so-bathered SUVs … UK and NL tourists being overcharged 2-5 times, old biddies with their lover boys, more and less desperate local girls who want to have EUropean boyfriend (hoping for EU passport marriage gateway). Overwhelming (and sometimes annoying) friendliness of people and terribly pissing off boomsters who would follow you for half a mile in hope to convince you to use some 5x overpriced service. Schools with one book for whole school and teachers making £20/mo who needs to cope with vast amount of kids having no amenities (even proper toilets) to provide education.

Money matters are quite a challenge in Gambia … A tourist coming with his card to get some money from ATM is usually not restricted by his available funds but capabilities of local ATMs not able to dispense more than 4000 Dalasi (~£80) simply because such a large number of banknotes overfill dispenser window. Highest amount on loical banknote is D100 so everytime you go to ATM you end up with 40-50 notes filling up your pocket – you feel rich until you pay for dinner D300, beer D50 … and you need to run to ATM again :)

But also beautyfull nature, beaches, natural reserves with birds …
